The activities of drug pricing workshop which was held in the Intercontinental Hotel, has been ended on Wednesday; starting from 15 to 16- 5 1429H, that equals 20 to 21- 5- 2008. More than 300 participants represented seven Gulf, Arabian and International countries attended the workshop; which included reviewing national and international experiences in field of drug pricing, introducing the SFDA study of drug prices in the Kingdom and the availability of drugs in the local market which aims to compare the rules of drugs pricing in the Kingdom with other countries ones, beside comparing the prices of drugs in the Kingdom to other countries prices and how do prices affect drugs availability in the local market. The workshop also included introducing the view point of the private sector toward national and international pricing policies since it sought having pricing rules that comply with the interest of all parts; which reflects the SFDA concern of transparency principle in dealing with all parts.
The most obvious results of SFDA study show that the prices of drugs in the Kingdom are the least comparing to other countries of the region, 77% of registered drugs prices in the Kingdom are less than 60 Riyal and number of generic drugs (drugs that have the same effective substance, pharmaceutical form and effect) do not exist in local market for several reasons such as the strategies of the marketing company or the price which is given by the pricing company or the few consumed amount of drug.
The workshop summed up with the importance of having a complete system of drug pricing that concerned with the coming articles:

2- Forming a specialized group to price drugs that includes: a financial expert, an expert of economy, a pharmaceutical expert specialized in drugs economy and a specialist in drugs manufacturing as well as number of pharmacists and doctors.
3- Providing a reliable unbiased source of drugs prices in some countries; the SFAD suggested having an electronic data base of drugs prices in the countries of the region.
4- Applying the principle of roofer top to generic drugs prices, after a given period of registering them following the original drugs.
5- Assuring the existence of a product in the local market after six months of its registration.
6- Providing a mechanism to drug companies, through which prices are discussed.
7- Contriving a mechanism to negotiate with drug companies.
8- The pricing procedure of a drug should go along with the one of its registration.
