Effects of Intensive Glucose Lowering in Type 2 Diabetes

2008-06-11

Epidemiologic studies have shown a relationship between glycated hemoglobin levels and cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. Effects of Adding Salmeterol to Inhaled Corticosteroids on Serious Asthma-Related Events

2008-06-11

Background: Recent analyses have suggested an increased risk for serious asthma-related adverse events in patients receiving long-acting β-agonists.

Purpose: To examine whether the incidences of severe asthma-related events (hospitalizations, intubations, deaths, and severe exacerbations) differ in persons receiving salmeterol plus inhaled corticosteroids compared with inhaled corticosteroids alone.

Randomised aspirin assignment and risk of adult-onset asthma in the Women’s Health Study

2008-06-17

Randomised data in men show a small but significant reduction in the risk of adult-onset asthma among those given aspirin. The results from an observational study in women suggest that frequent use of aspirin decreases the risk of adult-onset asthma, but randomised data in women are lacking. A study was undertaken to test the effect of 100 mg aspirin or placebo on alternate days on the risk of adult-onset asthma in the Women’s Health Study.

Bone status of children aged 5–8 years, treated with dexamethasone for chronic lung disease of prematurity

2008-06-17

It is not known whether treatment with dexamethasone in the neonatal period may lead to reduced bone mineral density in childhood.

Anthropometric and bone densitometry measurements were taken of children aged 5–8 years who had chronic lung disease (CLD) in the neonatal period (n = 22). 15 of these children were treated with dexamethasone. A control group consisted of children born preterm who did not develop CLD (n = 29).
